BAT – SENIOR LEGAL COUNSEL NORDICS – ON HOLD

ROLE DESCRIPTION

As Senior Legal Counsel Nordics, you will spearhead the operational efficiency and effectiveness of the legal department, partner on cross Nordic business projects as well as support the Head of Legal Nordics in transforming the legal department to complement the business objectives of British American Tobacco (BAT) Nordics. Additionally, the role involves exploring relevant technology to enhance performance and cost-effectiveness.  

This position involves providing strategic guidance on various legal matters and ensuring that the necessary ways of working are in place to adhere to legal, compliance and regulatory compliance. The role is crucial in driving the organization’s strategy forward by enhancing the efficiency and effectiveness of the legal department. Additionally, you will be responsible for the optimal management of team resources through the design and implementation of streamlined processes and ways of working.

The position is based at BAT’s Nordic head office in central Copenhagen (Bernstorffsgade), conveniently located close to the Central Station.

Some travel within the Nordic region can be expected as required.

LEGAL TEAM

You will join a well-established and collaborative Nordic legal team consisting of eight team members, including the Head of Legal Nordics, Alexandra Iskandar. The team operates across the Nordic markets and plays a central role in supporting BAT’s commercial and regulatory agenda in the region.

AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY

BAT is looking for a business-minded lawyer with experience within commercial law and compliance.

As Senior Legal Counsel Nordics, you will among other be handling the following tasks:

  • Assist the Head of Legal Nordics in transforming the legal department to align with business objectives and strategy. This includes providing strategic legal advice and support on various commercial and compliance matters to ensure the legal department’s activities are in line with the company’s goals.
  • Work closely with the Head of Legal Nordics to develop and implement strategies that align the legal department’s operations with the broader business objectives. This involves identifying areas for improvement and driving initiatives that enhance the department’s contribution to the company’s success.
  • Lead and support change management initiatives across the Nordics to ensure smooth transitions and adoption of new processes, technologies, and ways of working.
  • Engage with key stakeholders across the organization to understand their needs and ensure the legal department’s services are aligned with business requirements. This includes regular communication and collaboration with other departments such as Trade, Brand, Finance, HR and CORA.
  • Provide best in class legal advice on complex legal matters and ensure compliance with relevant laws and regulations. This includes advising on commercial law, corporate law, contracts, marketing law, competition law and IP law, corporate governance, compliance (such as anti-bribery, sanctions and data protection), regulatory matters and risk management.
  • Drafting, negotiating and reviewing local contracts and contractual documents (including sales, distribution, services and local procurement contracts), as well as local implementation of global partnerships and global framework agreements.
  • Implement best practices within the legal department to support business objectives and foster a culture of continuous improvement and innovation.
  • Maintain, develop and implement corporate policies, procedures and systems.

REPORTING AND TITLE

Reporting to: Head of Legal Nordics, Alexandra Iskandar.

Title: Senior Legal Counsel Nordics.

IDEAL EXPERIENCE

Education: You have a Master of Laws (cand.jur. or cand.merc.jur.) from Denmark or another Scandinavian country.  

Work experience: At least 8 years of relevant post-graduate experience in commercial, compliance, and corporate matters, gained through in-house legal experience, possibly complemented by experience from an established law firm. Experience within an FMCG business or in a highly regulated industry is an advantage, but not a requirement.

Legal specialization: You have broad experience within the field of commercial law, competition law, marketing law, and IP law. In addition, you have experience with compliance matters, including GDPR, AML, antitrust, and / or sanctions.

Legal Strategy Development: You have experience in developing and implementing an in-house legal strategy, with a focus on creating processes, structures, and policies that support the organization’s objectives.

Language skills: You must be fluent in English and in one of the Nordic languages (Danish, Swedish or Norwegian), both written and spoken.

You constructively balance legal and commercial interests, and you are comfortable with flagging and challenging processes and decisions that impose regulatory compliance risks.   

Communication: You are a clear communicator with the ability to communicate complex matters in a simple, clear and compelling manner. Further, you have good presentation and drafting skills.

Working style: You are structured and forward-thinking, with a strong ability to plan, anticipate needs and manage shifting priorities. You focus on optimizing output and contributing to effective, commercially minded legal solutions.

Hands-on & proactive: You are hands-on, proactive and adaptable, with a sound sense of commercial judgement. You stay calm under pressure and can handle shifting or unexpected demands without losing focus.

Strategic & commercial: You think strategically and act with a commercial mindset. You contribute to developing and delivering legal strategies that support business goals. You are quick to understand new issues and adapt to change, and you bring an innovative approach to how legal services are delivered. You work well with others, influence constructively, and value collaboration as a key to creating effective, forward-thinking solutions.
